Paraffin Wax - The Industry Standard

Paraffin or ‘mineral wax’ is the most common wax used in candles - even many sold as 'luxury.' It’s inexpensive and effective at delivering fragrance, which is why it’s so pervasive.

But paraffin is a petroleum-derived by-product. Burning paraffin candles can release compounds that are classified as carcinogenic toxins.
Many high end candle brands still use it because it’s familiar and cost-efficient, but it reflects an older way of thinking about home fragrance.

House of Intent chooses not to build with paraffin, because we believe your home and your health deserves something more considered.

SOY WAX - THE COMMON NATURAL ALTERNATIVE

Soy wax is derived from hydrogenated soybean oil and is widely recognised as a more natural, renewable alternative to paraffin. Many eco-minded candle brands use soy wax, and it can burn cleaner with less soot. However, soy wax varies significantly in quality and origin. Much commercial soy is grown in regions where;

  • Deforestation and chemical-intensive farming are concerns
  • Genetically modified soybeans are common, meaning a lot of natural marketed soy candles are in fact GMO (genetically modified organism)
  • Traceability and supply chain transparency can be limited - often sourced from South America

For a brand built on intentional choice and traceability, the source and farming practices of our wax matter.
Insisting on a non-GMO wax reflects our commitment to thoughtful sourcing and transparency - not just in how our candles burn, but in how their ingredients are grown.

BEESWAX - NATURAL, BUT NOT A MATCH FOR OUR PHILOSOPHY

Beeswax is one of the oldest candle waxes, naturally produced by honey bees. It burns cleanly and can emit a subtle natural fragrance on its own. However;

  • Beeswax is an animal-derived ingredient, which does not align with our vegan philosophy
  • Increased demand for beeswax can put pressure on ecosystems and pollinators
  • Its natural scent and properties can interfere with carefully designed fragrance profiles

We love and respect bees - and we prefer to protect them rather than commercialise them.

OUR CHOICE - PREMIUM PLANT-BASED WAX

After extensive testing and refinement, we chose a high-quality plant wax blend made from 100% Coconut and Rapeseed wax. This combination offers an ideal balance of;
