Wax

Paraffin Wax

Or mineral wax as many leading brands like to call it, is an absolute no no. Our advice if you have some expensive paraffin wax candles in your home? Burn them outside! Parrafin wax is a by-product petroleum. It is cheap, widely available and heavily used in ‘luxury’ high end, expensive candles. For many years, there's been a real lack of transparency when it comes to candle ingredients. Now, we are slowly leaning into the truth about what we burn and what chemicals are released into our air and homes. Releasing carcinogens and other toxins into your space to smell a fragrance? It’s simply not a compromise we are willing to make.

Soy Wax

Soy Wax is often sold as the 'clean' alternative to paraffin, but sourcing matters. Much soy is grown in South America, where expansion has been linked to deforestation, and it’s frequently farmed using pesticides and chemical inputs. It’s also commonly genetically modified - which typically signals an intensive, chemical-dependent farming system (often tied to heavy herbicide use). Even when the wax is refined, that upstream chemical load is part of the chain - and when you burn a candle, you’re turning ingredients into indoor air. That’s why we care about traceability, not just labels.

Beeswax

Beeswax has a long tradition in candle making, but it does not align with our principles. Firstly, we love Bees in Essex! Secondly, Beeswax is not vegan, so it excludes anyone avoiding animal-derived ingredients. Growing demand for bee-derived materials adds pressure to a resource that should be protected, not commercialised further. For our brand, there was definitely no room for upsetting Bees in our supply chain!

The House of Intent Wax

After a lot of research, we opted for our premium wax - a non toxic, non GMO plant based wax, of coconut and rapeseed only. 100% Plant-based, sustainable, 100% vegan and cruelty free - no mineral oil, no fillers and no animal products. GMO-free matters to us because it’s part of a cleaner, more intentional supply chain - fewer unknowns, more traceability.
Low to virtually no soot and clean burning, for calmer and cleaner indoor air. We only use suppliers from the UK and Europe, an intentional decision to use a local product with a shorter supply chain and a smaller transport footprint. Rapeseed wax is made by transforming rapeseed oil into a stable, solid wax. It is not eaten and it does not behave like rapeseed oil in food. Coconut and rapeseed are clean, consistent and controlled, meaning the cleanest, most luxurious possible burn available.
