Hello, we are Michele and Amanda, the founders of House of Intent.
It all began in 2021, when we became neighbours within a Essex village in the heart of the Countryside. We soon become close friends, enjoying a weekly meet up and long country walks. Both inspired by our beautiful surroundings, for the next few years we’d often enjoy a cuppa together (or the odd glass of wine), chatting away and lighting a 'luxury' candle or two. That was until we started to research what we were actually burning.... Our so called high end ‘luxury’ candles were anything but. Made with Paraffin wax, we learned that burning paraffin wax into our air, means releasing carcinogenic toxins. Not only was the wax worrying us, but the synthetic fragrance was simply called 'fragrance' - we realised this can be a complete blanket term for a whole lot of chemicals. There seemed to be a real lack of ingredients and transparency. We learned that the synthetic fragrance used in the candles we were burning can contain parabens and other chemicals that are known endocrine disruptors. Once we knew this, we couldn’t 'un-know' it, so we were left trying to find a solution....
We found some better choices, but largely the options were soy candles, many not highlighting if they were GMO free. Also, most seemed to be made with synthetic fragrance. The fragrance actually bothered us as much as the wax. As two women who like to use natural, non toxic ingredients, the search for a truly natural candle became a real mission!
We looked at a lot of brands, but not one seemed to go as far as we wanted them to go.....So this is where it started.
Between 2 husbands, 2 kids, a dog and two cats, we started our journey.. We delved deep into wax research - looking at all options on the market, attended many candle making courses ( it's not as easy as it seems!) whilst learning all about fragrance and the health implications, leading us to become not only candle makers, but also aromatherapy experts..
Armed with the shared intention of creating a truly clean candle, that not only smelt good but also did good, we knew we couldn't stop until we had achieved what we had set out to achieve. We tested, tested and tested some more, we laughed A LOT (and definitely shed the odd tear here and there.... as I said, it's not as easy as it seems...). After months of research, study ( and more testing), we had finally done it - the Luxury Bio candle was created.
Hand poured in Essex, made with a vegan, GMO free, premium plant based wax of only coconut and rapeseed wax, 100% pure traceable essential oils to support your well-being, and a cotton wick; our candles are phthalate-free, paraben-free, CMR-free (no carcinogens, no reproductive toxins, no mutagens), silicone free and PEG free.
Nothing else. Pure, clean and transparent, to offer you clean, intentional burning, that actually supports your health, not harms it.
